What’s The Best Thing To Feed My Dog?

October 2nd, 2009 · No Comments · pet health, pet news

Often dog owners wonder what the best thing is to feed their dog. Is dry better than canned? Should I make it myself or is getting it from a store best? It’s not easy to know the right thing to do.

First of all, if your dog is overweight, you want to be aware of the portion of food you are giving him. “Suggested serving” on a dog food label isn’t set in stone. Dogs will vary based on their breed, intake and amount of exercise they get. Always use the same measuring cup when you portion out the food for consistency. If your dog seems to be putting on weight then cut back on the amount. Put your dog on a scale before adjusting his diet and then put him back on the scale in a couple of weeks to see if there is a difference. Then modify his food serving accordingly. Don’t forget the exercise. All dogs need routine exercise!

Okay, so now you have some suggestions on weight management, but what about what to actually give him. Is dry food better than canned food or vice versa? It’s not a yes or no answer to this question. Alot of your decision depends on your dog. Dry food sometimes gives stomach problems. Again, it depends on your dog. Canned food has less preservatives and more water so may be a better choice for a dog with a sensitive stomach. Also, for dogs with teeth or gum problems canned food is easier to eat. Research has shown there is no difference between dry and canned food for a dogs oral health.

What about making my own dog food? There are many dog owners who do exactly that. Of course, that this decision is more costly and time consuming. Typically homemade dog food consists of fresh meats, grains and vegetables. Many dog owners who have made the decision to make their dog food at home are including things like barley and wheatgrass. These are natural antioxidants and have health benefits for your dog. Always remember to talk with your vet about what to include. Typically your vet will suggest that you add a nutritional supplement. Once you have an approved recipe, be sure to follow it exactly.

Watch how your dog responds to any change in diet. Whatever you decide for your dog, speak with your veterinarian for additional information.
