If you have small children and dogs in the house, there are some basic rules to follow to ensure their safety. Always keep both of them in your vision or keep them separated. Put the dogs in their dog crates or outside in dog pens, or put the kids in a playpen or another room.
Dogs don’t have alot of choices when a small child antagonizes them. They can try to retreat by leaving the area or hiding under bed, but if the child persists, expect barking, growling and maybe nipping. It’s important to utilize safe places like dog crates and dog pens, and always be alert to what the child is doing.
Teaching children by example that animals are to be treated with care is the best way to avoid unpleasant mishaps. Don’t allow hitting or teasing. Children will pick up on this and follow your lead. That way your pets won’t have to be put in dog crates or dog pens, but can be among the family where they’d much rather be.
Till next time …
