We’ve all seen dogs board planes in dog carriers and cats in cat carriers, but what about those that aren’t personal pets? Those that are shipped by businesses, like breeders. These are in the cargo holds of the planes and not always under someone’s watchful eye.
Many airlines will allow dog carriers, cat carriers and even some small pet strollers to come on board in the main airline cabins as long as they fit under the seat. Of course, larger dogs have to be crated and put in the cargo hold along with the “non pet” category animals.
Any animals who are “family pets” and suffer injury or death due to air travel have to be reported. However, those not categoriezed as “family pets” don’t have to be reported. This loophole is one that needs to be closed. Putting pressure on the Department of Transportation is a good start.
Till next time …
