We have a friend who lost her home and who has two dogs. Neither of them have ever been in dog crates or dog pens. We offered to take care of them while she was searching for a new place for all of them to live.
When we first got them home, we put them outside in one of the larger dog pens to see how they would do. Maybe it was because it was the first time either of them had been in a confined space like that, but a problem developed. The larger dog became the alpha dog, but with aggressive tendencies. We were concerned the smaller dog might be hurt so we took out one of our large dog crates and brought it inside.
As we have other animals inside the house it was necessary to use one of the dog crates for our new guest. We removed the smaller dog from the dog pens and took her inside. She was visibly comforted by being removed from the dog pens. We put a nice pad in the dog crates and placed her inside. Although she was confused, she didn’t seem to mind it. Maybe it felt safe. Both of the dogs adjusted to their new spaces pretty well and it wasn’t long until they were rejoined with their owner and off to a new home together.
