Governor Schwarzenegger recently vetoed a bill that would require pets to be restrained while in vehicles. I love to hold my pets while in the car, but it really isn’t safe. Statistics in California show that from 2001 to 2007 there were 346 people injured in collisions and 4 people dead from being distracted by their pet while driving.
I encourage people to use dog carriers, harnesses, cat carriers, or dog crates when driving with your pet in the car. If you go out and take pet strollers with you, there are pet strollers that have removable carriers for use in the car. Although we know our pets would rather be roaming around and sticking their heads out the window, we need to be responsible for their safety.
The bill in California has called attention to this situation. Get your pets used to riding in their dog carriers and cat carriers. This is not only for your safety, but theirs as well.
