Does Your Dog Get Anxious When You Leave?

July 30th, 2008 · No Comments · pet news

I read an article on dog separation anxiety the other day that I found interesting.  Basically, it stated that if your dog causes damage to the door when you leave, excessively barks when left alone or piddles/poops on the floor when you’re gone, you might think they have separation anxiety.  Well, guess again.

This article says it’s more likely a pack hierarchy issue.  I’m the first to admit, I treat my pets like they’re my children … but I do still have consistent rules, and that was the point of this article to me.  The article further stated that treating your dog as your infant child will be viewed by your dog as you seeing him as the pack leader.  So not too much affection.

The key seems to be rules and consistency.  Have a routine of walking your dog twice a day, or use dog crates or dog pens consistently for certain periods of the day.  Work on obedience training several times a week. The point is that you’re in control and your dog will begin to understand the difference between your affection and him being the pack leader.

The article also said not to feed your dog table scraps at the table.  I absolutely agree with this as it promotes begging behavior as well as finicky eating … you cat owners know what I mean!  Use pet beds not people furniture for your pets.  I know we have cat beds and large dog beds available for Pepper and Sugar, and that’s where they go … not on the people furniture unless they’re specifically invited.  The key is consistency so your faithful pets won’t get confused about who’s in charge, and act out when you’re not around.

Till next time …
