Yes, this week is dog bite prevention week. Pet owners are being asked to do what they need to be doing all the time more fervently this week. I’m always amazed at the lack of responsible pet owners there are. It’s really pretty basic.
Use your dog carriers, cat carriers, pet strollers or the like when taking your dogs or cats out and they won’t be biting anyone. If you have a larger dog, make sure it’s on a leash.
If someone approaches your house, like a mail carrier, don’t let your kids answer the door unless your dogs are contained by dog carriers , dog crates or are put in another room. Your dogs’ instinct is to protect and when the mail carrier puts out his/her hand to hand over a letter or package, dogs might react.
If your dogs are outside dogs, make sure they are in dog pens so they can’t bite anyone. Of course, most dogs won’t bite unless poorly socialized to begin with, or provoked. I would hope the majority of pet owners don’t have this issue. Just use common sense.
Till next time …
